Lost In Time - Simply, Yet Powerfully

July 2005 Press Release
LOST IN TIME
Simply, Yet Powerfully

Manila, 29 June 2005 LOST IN TIME is arguably the best romantic drama in Hong Kong for the year 2003. The film is remarkable in its affecting detail and storytelling restraint, which spark off Cecilia Cheung Pak-chi and Sean Lau Ching-wan’s fine acting. The cinema was nominated for eight Hong Kong Film Awards and was the winner of two: Best Actress (Cecelia Cheung) and Best Original Film Score. Premiering Saturday, 30 July at 21:00 on STAR CHINESE MOVIES.

Siu-wai (Cecilia Cheung) finds herself broke and stuck with stepson Lok Lok (Harashima Daichi) when her minibus driver fiancé (Louis Koo) gets killed in a fatal accident. She decides to carry on his business, hoping to keep the sweet memories between them alive. But she knows nothing about the cutthroat world of Hong Kong transportation and ends up scrounging for every penny at the end of the day. Things turn for the better when she meets Dai-fai (Sean Lau), a minibus driver who bails her out from time to time and shows her the ropes on the roads. Dai-fai slowly becomes a surrogate father to the boy, but Siu-wai doesn’t want any further assistance from Dai-fai and keeps pushing him away. Yet, it seems that she can’t make it on her own. Can Siu-wai let go of the past and proceed to the next chapter of her life?

Beyond being a modest tearjerker, the mature romantic drama slips in some entertaining aspects related to minibuses driving. Siu-wai’s choice to be a minibus driver presents a colourful coverage of her difficulty in entering the non-franchised routes, which are often under shady authority and operated by the dog-eat-dog style among competing minibus drivers. A scene-stealing moment early in the film sees Dai-fai teaching the young lady how to manage her route for the greatest returns or, as Hong Kong road users may believe, how to hustle through busy streets like a maniac.

The naturally melancholic Cecilia Cheung wrings her guts for a compelling performance. With child actor Harashima Daichi scoring full mark for cuteness, the pop diva instantly clicked with him, generating an on-screen chemistry that creates maximum tears. While Louis Koo offers a good presence in flashbacks, Sean Lau delivers a bravura performance as his Dai-fai character blends into Siu-wai’s life with minimal theatrics.

LOST IN TIME presents a touching story and some refreshingly real emotions. It lets the characters and emotions reveal themselves to the viewer. Director Derek Yee Tung-sing proves to be an expert in pulling heartstrings and demonstrates that hackneyed adage of all storytelling – “show not tell” – with admirable skill. Watch this solid and involving drama on Saturday, 30 July at 21:00 on STAR CHINESE MOVIES. Its emotional wallop will get your feeling developed!

STAR CHINESE MOVIES is available on Dream Satellite TV (Ch 29), on premium in SkyCable (Ch 53) and Home Cable (Ch 77) and Parasat (Ch 65).
