ANDY HUI
From Boy-Next-Door To Good Boy No More
Andy Hui Chi-on was born on 12 August 1967. He entered showbiz in 1986 after finishing first runner-up in a singing contest in Hong Kong, the same one which one of Hong Kong’s “Four Heavenly Kings” Leon Lai-ming came in third. Some say that was the only time Andy surpassed one of the “Four Heavenly Kings.” Top four or not, no one can deny Andy’s music, albeit increasingly sexual.
Andy released his first record on 5 May 1988 – a day that he’ll never forget. But things didn't go smooth after that, for the singer could not figure out his style. He tried many different directions and finally settled on melancholic love songs.
At the same time, he ditched his boy-next-door image and wowed the public with his new vanguard, mod look. His transformation was well received and his records became more and more popular. Still, it seemed like he was always behind the “Four Heavenly Kings,” settling only in the fifth place despite his efforts. Andy never gave up, nor did he blame it on fate. He kept working hard and kept recording music with admirable perseverance.
During the 10-odd years in the industry, Andy released more than 40 albums with varieties progressively added to each one of them. His lyrics deliver deeper meanings and he skillfully incorporated more vocal techniques in his new albums. He has successfully jumped from a no-name new singer to “The Most Popular Male Singer,” leaping a big step forward in his career.
In February 2005, Andy took the Hong Kong music concert history to a critical limit. In his aphrodisiac rendition, he stripped off his top and showed the audience his jaw-dropping six packs in midair. The concert reached climax when six seducing dancers in teasing costumes, or the lack of, took off his pants, flashing his g-string. With passionate songs and provocative dance moves, Andy stunned his fans with a concert that has never been done before in Hong Kong.
Andy bluntly admitted that after an entertainment journalist shot pictures of him wearing a white swimming trunk, his male-fan base suddenly expanded. Andy joked, “I don’t know whether the male fans like my top half because of my singing, or my bottom half because of those pictures!”
Andy said he never wanted to be no. 1. He only knows that one has to be bold in trying new things in order to advance. Judging from his audacious show, the singer definitely overrides the “Four Heavenly Kings” in the sense of daring bravery. Andy, like most singers, has moved on to acting as well. Check out Andy’s screen performance in SEX AND THE BEAUTIES, where he plays a tough, no-nonsense fellow. The comedy uses the long running and wildly popular American TV series SEX IN THE CITY as source material, and crafts a clever, sexy romantic comedy about a handful of single women in the SAR. Premiering Saturday, 6 August at 21:00 on STAR CHINESE MOVIES.
