Halloween TV-Watching Journal

3 October – Halloween month is here! It’s the best time of the year to curl up on the couch and watch horror, sci-fi and fantasy films. I’m looking forward to the thrilling treats on STAR CHINESE MOVIES every Saturday at 21:00 throughout the festive month. They’re guaranteed to have people looking over their shoulders at every little bump in the dark for nights to come. I’m ready for the shivers!

8 October THE PARK
STAR CHINESE MOVIES is playing its biggest Halloween blockbuster of the month today! THE PARK is a frightening tale of seven friends who fatally explore the mystery of an abandoned Bangkok park, one that carries its share of creepy stories. Hong Kong pop idol Edwin Siu sets the horror in motion when he disappears after a visit to the park. Younger sister Bobo Chan (Hong Kong starlet) and her friends follow, much to their peril. The director takes the reins and makes this movie a pulsating treat.

15 October SHAOLIN VS EVIL DEAD
Feeling sick, but I down a large cup of coffee and go ahead and enjoy SHAOLIN VS EVIL DEAD, an all-out horror movie that displays considerable kung fu dexterity. Here, Taoist priests and rivals Gordon Liu (KILL BILL) and Fan Siu-wong (THE STORY OF RICKY) are compelled to combine forces for the ultimate showdown with ancient zombies. I just love this one for its grisly humour, pounding score, and especially the bloodthirsty zombies. This movie gives me great ideas for my Halloween costume this year!

22 October SHIVER
It’s been a slow week, so I’m looking forward to watching SHIVER on STAR CHINESE MOVIES tonight. This is a light-on-gore but heavy-on-chills suspense thriller where sexy Hong Kong diva Athena Chu delivers one of her most intense performances as a lady wracked with doubt over whether she’s clairvoyant or insane. Absolutely everything works in this movie, especially the diva's convincing performance of paranoia and claustrophobia following an injury, which leads to her ghostly visions of a serial killer.

29 October THE DEATH CURSE
THE DEATH CURSE is the last Halloween blockbuster on STAR CHINESE MOVIES, giving the season a lighthearted send-off. Starring Hong Kong pop duos Twins and Boy’z, this is a semi-comedic mystery about eight siblings in a spooky mansion dividing their deceased dad's wealth and being killed off one by one. The creepy scenes in the movie are impressive, as are the young and juicy pop stars – definitely a nice close to the trick-or-treating month!
