My Dream Girl: An Inside Out Extreme Makeover

November 2005 – Press Release
MY DREAM GIRL
An Inside Out Extreme Makeover

Manila, 10 Nov 05 – A man expecting to give a woman a makeover winds up giving her his heart instead in this romantic comedy from Hong Kong. Starring the cute Hong Kong singer-actor Ekin Cheng (Young and Dangerous, My Wife is 18) and Vicki Zhao-wei (dubbed as the queen of box-office in China), My Dream Girl has a simple but effective plot that will twist your heartstrings, yet make you laugh. Zhao’s 20-odd horrendous but hilarious costumes also make the movie a lot of fun to watch! Premiering Saturday, Nov 12 at 21:00 on STAR CHINESE MOVIES.

In this stylish 21st century take on the classic My Fair Lady, Zhao plays Ling, a rough and uncouth lady living in the slums of Shanghai. She’s reunited with her long-lost billionaire tycoon father, who hires Joe (Ekin Cheng), an image consultant who knows nothing about image consulting, to give his daughter a makeover and turn her into a grand dame of high society. Just when it seems that Ling might overcome her background, a secret is uncovered that might ruin everything!

Ekin Cheng, who proved his comic charm in My Wife is 18, performs decently as an urban Hong Kong version of Henry Higgins. Vicki Zhao Wei doesn’t pale in comparison, bringing a grace and spunk into her Shanghai version of Eliza Doolittle in this Raymond Yip-directed update of the classic Pygmalion story. Zhao’s ever-changing costumes and funky hairstyles alone will crack you up, although watching the actress’ intellectual and behavioural transformation during the film is just as rewarding.

The actors reportedly had a hoot during the shoot, and their easy chemistry and positive energy sparkles on film. Filled with witty wordplay, quick repartee and random moments of unexpected humour, Zhao and Cheng play out the irresistible pull of their two characters, amidst the backdrop of different worlds and social expectations. And when the two don’t meet – the results can be pretty hilarious.

So don’t forget to check out this fun-filled romantic comedy and watch Zhao transform from an ugly duckling to a beautiful swan in this classic rags-to-riches romance story. Premiering Saturday, Nov 12 at 21:00 on STAR CHINESE MOVIES.
